The ultimate goal of an Advanced Placement Music Theory course is to develop a student's ability to recognize, understand, and describe the basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. (AP Course Description booklet) If a student cannot read the basics of music, such as note names, time signatures, and rhythm, he or she should not enroll in this course. Throughout the year the students will work to develop aural, sight-singing, written, compositional, and analytical skills. By the completion of this course students should master the rudiments and terminology of music, including: notation, intervals, scales and keys, chords, metric organization, rhythmic patterns, harmonization of a melody, realization of a figured bass, analysis of repertoire, functional triadic harmony, tonal relationships, modulation, phrase structure, and formal analysis.
